On November 22nd, 2024, I spent seven hours immersed in a Paediatric First Aid course with South Coast First Aid. It was an intense day, led by the lovely and funny Emma, whose energy and humour kept us engaged throughout the day. The course was packed with practical tasks, keeping my mind active from start to finish. By the end of the day, I was proud to have passed and earned a Level 3 qualification in Paediatric First Aid.

You might wonder what a photography enthusiast is doing at a first aid course. The answer is simple: safety. As someone who often works with children, this qualification is more than just a piece of paper—it's a vital skill set that complements my work as a photographer.

Why Paediatric First Aid Matters in Kid Photography?
Children are naturally curious, energetic, and unpredictable. These traits make them wonderful subjects for photography, but they also come with potential risks. Knowing how to respond quickly and calmly can make all the difference.

Here are some reasons why I wanted to do this course:

1. Ensuring a Safe Environment
Understanding basic first aid equips me to spot potential hazards and take steps to minimize risks before they occur. For example, I can better assess the safety of a location, ensure props are child-friendly, and manage active kids during shoots.

2. Building Trust with Parents
Parents trust me to not only capture beautiful moments but also to ensure their child’s well-being throughout the session. Being first-aid certified reassures them that I’m prepared to handle any minor mishaps or emergencies.

3. Being Prepared for the Unexpected
Children are quick and often unpredictable. A tumble or a small accident can happen in an instant. Knowing how to respond calmly and effectively not only helps the child feel safe but also prevents the situation from escalating.

4. Adding Professionalism to My Work
Having a qualification like Level 3 Paediatric First Aid reflects my commitment to professionalism and care in my work. It shows that I go beyond just taking photos—I truly care about the experience and safety of my young clients.

5. Peace of Mind for Me
Knowing I have the skills to act in an emergency brings me peace of mind. It allows me to focus on capturing the perfect shot without the worry of “what if something goes wrong?”

A New Perspective on Responsibility
The course was a reminder of how much responsibility comes with working with children. It also reinforced the importance of being fully present and prepared in every session. While I initially signed up for the course thinking it would be a practical skill to have, it has become a cornerstone of my approach to child photography.

So, when I pick up my camera to photograph children, I know I’m not just capturing smiles and giggles—I’m ensuring those moments are created in the safest environment possible. And that, to me, makes every hour spent in that training room worth it.
